People are alive naturally and spiritually at the same time. At a subconscious level, we're influenced by our links to the spiritual world -- especially through the good and evil spirits (people) in heaven and hell that are most closely associated with us. It's a lot like the familiar cartoon picture of the angel whispering in one ear, and the devil in the other ear.
