The Most Important Teachings About the Lord

By Rev. Prescott A. Rogers

This painting by Richard Cook of the newborn baby Jesus, with Mary and Joseph, evokes the spiritual power of this long-awaited advent.

There are some big — great big — concepts in this list, and they need to be broken out and explained carefully, but... we thought it would be helpful to provide this as a sort of outline/summary.

1. The Lord is love itself (and wisdom itself, and use itself).

2. He is a Human Being (the Divine Human).

3. He alone is God, and He is to be worshipped as the Lord Jesus Christ.

4. He is One, in whom exists a trinity.

5. The trinity are His three attributes (NOT 3 persons):

- Father = Divine love = Divine essence = Divine itself

- Son = Divine wisdom = Divine form = Divine human

- Holy Spirit = Divine use = Divine activity = Divine proceeding

6. His use is to create and to save, making Him the Creator and Savior.

7. He is also a Redeemer who, by His advent and glorification, bought back the human race from hell's domination so that individuals might be saved.

8. He took on a human-ness (like any person's human-ness) from the virgin Mary at the time of His advent. This human-ness in Jesus can be referred to as the "human-from-Mary", and, like all of us, it was filled with hereditary tendencies towards evil.

9. Within Jesus, the human-from-Mary part of Him read the Scriptures, prayed to God as if He were someone else, and shunned evils as sins. Through this process, the human-from-Mary was put off in stages and the Divine from within Jesus took its place in stages. This is the Lord's glorification, or the process of making glorious or Divine. The human-from-Mary was replaced by the Divine Human.

10. The Lord has three degrees of existence: Divine celestial, Divine spiritual and Divine natural. The Divine natural was potential before His advent and became actual as a result of the glorification.

11. The Lord made His second coming in the eighteenth century A.D. by means of the Heavenly Doctrines revealed through Emanuel Swedenborg.

12. The Lord is the source of all order and acts according to it.

13. He is Divine completely and in all ways, and so He is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and all time is present to Him.

14. He is transcendent (completely beyond all creation), but also immanent (present in all of creation).

15. He reveals Himself in His creation and, more fully, in His Word.

16. With Him all good from His love and all truth from His wisdom are absolute.

17. Divine providence is the Lord's government of His creation.

18. He wills that good happen (providence), but He allows evil to happen (permission) in order to protect freedom, the most essential quality of love.

19. Providence looks to eternity as the Lord strives to bring the best end for all people, allowing them to make the final decision.

20. The laws of Divine providence are the laws of order.
